Frequently Asked Questions

Are Entlebuchers hyper?
Entles are a working breed. They have a lot of energy and endurance. They require a regular exercise program or routine to keep them healthy both physically and mentally. This is not a breed that can be left in the backyard. If you do not stimulate them through play or training, then they will find outlets for that energy.

Do they shed a lot?
In my experience, they shed similar to a Labrador. Typically, they "blow" their coats twice per year, and shed minimally between. Regular grooming will help keep this to an even lesser degree.

Should I choose a male or female?
Choosing between a male and female is truly a personal preference. A few things to keep in mind, when making your decision. An unneutered male will find the need to "mark his territory", if he smells a female in season. Females tend to be moody during their heat cycle. Typically, males tend to be slightly larger than females. We always recommend you seek out the best personality match for your family, regardless of sex.

Are they easy to train?
Their high intelligence, and willingness to please their owners, can help them master basic obedience in a very short period of time. This makes them a candidate for earning an AKC Rally Obedience title at a very young age. We are compiling a list of books and trainers, to help guide you to a successful outcome.

Do Entlebuchers like to travel?
Entles love to go places with their humans. They are completely content to sit in their seat, and make sure you are enjoying the car ride with them.

How does an Entlebucher compare to other breeds, such as the Border Collie?
In my experience, the Entlebucher is a more physical and vocal herding dog. They are just as agile, however, they do seem to have more endurance than the Border Collie.

Are they a destructive breed?
As a whole, no these are not destructive dogs. However, if you do not find an outlet for their energy, mental and physical, they can become so. We recommend a regular exercise routine, even 10 minutes on a treadmill, and appropriate chew toys.

Can I take my Entle to AKC shows?
Currently the Entlebucher can compete in the Miscellaneous Class at AKC Conformation shows. As well as earn suffix titles in Agility, Obedience, Herding, Tracking and Rally Obedience events and trials. Once the breed moves to full recognition by the AKC, we will be able to earn Champion points and titles. We would encourage you to compete in as many shows and trials as you are able, in an effort to gain more visibility for the breed.

Do they bark a lot?
If your Entlebucher is barking, there is a reason. They will let you know of any animal, or person, that is in "their" yard. With a large dog's bark, they immediately garner respect. They are an excellent watchdog. Upon your return, they will bark to greet you. They have many vocalizations, which they will use to communicate with you. They certainly are not indiscriminate barkers. There is usually something happening when you hear your Entlebucher bark.

Do they like water?
We have found the only water our Entles do not care for, is their bath water.
